Map Nkonyaa School

Reread Chapters 2, 4, 5, 6 and 8. The forked path leads to a small hut and the Nkonyaa Tree; the larger shrine is behind the tree. Indoors there are classrooms, dorm rooms and a dining room.

  1. Which places belong outside and which inside?
  2. What does the book tell you about their positions? What will you have to imagine?

Draw your reader-created map. Label at least five places.

Purpose and preparation

20-30 minutes after reading. Supply pencils and the book. Distinguish a route sketch from a scaled map.

Suggested responses

  1. The forked path and hut/tree/shrine clues appear in Chapters 2 and 4; classroom and dorm clues in Chapters 5-6; dining room in Chapter 8.
  2. Accept varied indoor layouts: the story does not supply a complete plan. Label imagined placements as your own.
  3. The exercise practises spatial description and reading evidence; it does not assess locating real countries.

Support and stretch

Read aloud; invite pointing, drawings or dictation. Extend by asking for a page or picture clue.
