Sunshine Baby: moments together
Choose a familiar adult's voice, a comfortable position and one or two spreads. You do not have to finish the book in one sitting.
Read, notice, respond
- Name one picture. Pause and watch how the child responds.
- Echo a sound or smile; no answer needs to be tested.
- For a toddler, offer a choice: shall we look at the birds or turn the page?
Make the story yours
Use parent, grandparent, carer or another familiar adult. Your family does not need to look like the family in the story. Share only the memories you want to share.
A quiet ending
Read the final lullaby words together if you enjoy them. Keep normal safe-sleep arrangements; the book is not sleep or feeding guidance.
A moment to remember
Optional adult memory page. Use words or a drawing; a photograph is not required. Keep it private unless you choose to share it.

Purpose and preparation
Use one spread at a time. Leave the activity when the child has had enough.
Suggested responses
- This sheet records a personal moment; it is not a milestone chart.
- No child photograph, full name, location or account submission is requested.
- A school-age extension can discuss story events; do not apply Grade 1 conversation standards to babies.
Support and stretch
Offer pointing, looking, sounds or no response. Caregivers may dictate their notes.
Teaching links
Suggested England English: discussing reading and explaining ideas. US literacy links apply only to the stated school age group, not automatically to babies. Adapt to the learner; these materials are not an accredited curriculum.
