Sunshine Baby: shared play

Choose a calm, awake moment and follow your child's cues. Keep sessions short; stop if the child turns away or becomes distressed. An adult stays within reach.

Peek, then pause

The story has a hide-and-seek moment. Hide your own face briefly behind your hands or a large clean cloth held by you, then reveal it. Keep the child's face uncovered and pause for a response.

Clap and sing

Echo the story's clapping and singing with your own voice and hands. Invite an older toddler to copy if they wish. No small objects, bells or homemade shakers are needed.

Look up together

At the birds moment, point to the picture and make a gentle bird sound. Outdoors, observe from a safe position with an adult; do not approach or feed wildlife.

Keep play simple

No scented dough, food tasting, loose beads or scented oils are needed. Keep cloths and books out of the cot; this is awake, supervised play, not sleep advice.

Teacher notes Shared play

Purpose and preparation

A parent or carer leads one optional activity for a few minutes, without milestone promises.

Suggested responses

  1. Adults may simply narrate a picture or copy a sound; there is no right baby response.
  2. Children should not be forced to take part or have their body moved to enact the story.
  3. The linked NHS pages offer general play and safety guidance; activities here are original book-inspired suggestions.

Support and stretch

Use a quieter voice, reduce stimulation or simply sit together. This is not therapy, massage instruction or a developmental assessment.

Teaching links

Suggested England English: discussing reading and explaining ideas. US literacy links apply only to the stated school age group, not automatically to babies. Adapt to the learner; these materials are not an accredited curriculum.
