Design an adventure character

Design an adventure character
Yawa uses curiosity and resourcefulness. Your character need not have superpowers. Give them a goal, a useful skill and a limitation that makes choices interesting.
- What does my character want, and why?
- What can they do well? When might that skill not be enough?
- Who can help, and what choice will the character make?
Draw an original character. Label two meaningful design details.
A short backstory: one event that shaped this character
Teacher notes Character design
Purpose and preparation
25 minutes. Read a scene where Yawa examines an object or makes a decision before inventing a new character.
Suggested responses
- A skill is not an unlimited power; a limitation can create a challenge.
- Design details should connect to the character's role rather than assigning national identity from appearance alone.
- Choose safe fictional problems such as a missing exhibition label or a lost map. Do not ask pupils to disclose personal trauma.
Support and stretch
Read aloud; invite pointing, drawings or dictation. Extend by asking for a page or picture clue.
Teaching links
Suggested England English: discussing reading and explaining ideas. US literacy links apply only to the stated school age group, not automatically to babies. Adapt to the learner; these materials are not an accredited curriculum.
